One Room Schoolhouse Opening in Prospect LeffertsPosted: March 9, 2012
We are starting something great! It’s an urban one-room school house.
Beginning in Fall 2012, Brooklyn Apple Academy will offer a 3-day-a week program for students age 4-6.
We provide a hands-on education. We build catapults, write puppet shows, go on weekly field trips, and use our hands to develop our minds. We aim to have a class of 4-6 students this year, but we’d like the increase that number as the students and the school grow older. The exact location is yet to be determined, but it will be in a renovated basement in the Prospect Lefferts Gardens neighborhood in Brooklyn.
We are looking for families and students interested in committing to this project and to this community. Next year we hope to expand our program to 5-days-a-week.
Has this been done before?
Yes! This is how schools have been created for hundreds of years. We take inspiration on small size from The Rad School. radschool.org, and curriculum from Brightworks. sfbrightworks.org/blog/
When is school in session?
We’ll have classes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9am until 2pm. We operate on a similar schedule to NYC public schools.
How much is tuition?
We project that the tuition will be some where in the range of $8,000 dollars per year. The actual cost will vary based on location and class-size.
Who’s the teacher?
Noah Apple Mayers will be the lead teacher. You’ll find a bio and his blog about what’s going at another another micro-school he helped to build at imaginaryspace.org. We’ll also have an assistant teacher, and guest specialists.
I’m interested! What’s the next step?
E-mail Noah at BrooklynAppleAcademy@gmail.com with any questions, to get an application, or to set up a meeting.
Come to a meeting. March 10th 12-2 P.M. RSVP for address. Adults only.
